At the top of the climb, 5,200 ft up in the Trikuta hills, is the Bhawan — the sacred cave where the Mata is worshipped as three natural pindis. After the long walk, the darshan is the moment every pilgrim carries home. "Jai Mata Di" echoes off the rock.
A further 2.5 km climb above the Bhawan sits the temple of Bhairavnath — the yatra is said to be complete only after his darshan. The views over the valley from up here, with the wind and the prayer flags, are unforgettable.
The 12-km trek from Katra winds up through the Trikuta mountains, past food stalls, resting points and cool mountain air. Walk it, take a pony, a palki or a battery car — the path itself, alive with chanting pilgrims, is part of the pilgrimage.
Katra, at the foot of the hills, is where the yatra begins — a buzzing pilgrim town of hotels, dhabas and shops selling prasad and chunris. Register at the Yatra Parchi counter here, and your Faridabad cab drops you right at your hotel.

It\'s a long haul, so 3 days is ideal. Many drive overnight and reach Katra by morning.
The shrine is open all year. March to October is the most comfortable for the climb, with pleasant days and cool evenings. The two Navratri festivals (spring around March–April, autumn around September–October) are the most sacred and spectacular — but Katra overflows, so book your cab and stay weeks ahead.
Winter (December–February) is cold with occasional snow near the top — beautiful, but pack warm layers. Whatever the season, an early-morning start on the trek beats the crowds and the heat, and the mountain air near the Bhawan is worth every step.

Making a longer trip of it? Amritsar and the Golden Temple sit right on the way, Patnitop is a lovely hill halt near Katra, and Jammu\'s temples are close by. Tell the driver and the pilgrimage grows into a proper north-India circuit.
