You enter through the grand Nizam Gate and the Shahjahani Gate, past shops heaped with roses, chadars and offerings. The lane hums with pilgrims, and the closer you get, the more the whole place hushes into devotion.

The 12th-century lake, with its marble pavilions (baradari) built by Shah Jahan, glows amber as the sun drops behind the Aravallis. Walk the promenade, take a boat, or just sit on the steps and watch the light go soft.
A gentle paddle-boat ride across Ana Sagar is the town's favourite easy pleasure — families, couples, kids trailing hands in the water. Ringed by hills and old pavilions, it's the calm counterpoint to the busy dargah lanes.
Only 15 km away lies Pushkar — its sacred lake, 52 ghats, the rare Brahma temple and, each autumn, the famous camel fair. A sunset over Pushkar lake, temple bells ringing across the water, is the perfect end to an Ajmer trip.

A day each way, so one or two nights is ideal. Many drive up overnight for an early darshan.
October to March is Ajmer at its kindest — warm days for the lake and cool evenings for the Dargah. The Urs of Garib Nawaz (by the Islamic calendar, usually around January) brings lakhs of pilgrims and an electric atmosphere, but the town is packed, so book your cab and stay well ahead.
Just next door, the Pushkar Camel Fair (around November, at Kartik Purnima) is one of India\'s great spectacles — thousands of camels, folk music and a sea of colour by the sacred lake. Summers (May–June) are hot, so plan the Dargah for early morning and evening and let the AC handle the afternoons.

Making a loop of it? Pushkar is just 15 km on, Jaipur makes a superb break either way, and keen travellers carry on to Udaipur down the same highway. Tell the driver and the route grows into a proper Rajasthan tour.
